I chose this book for review because it uses unique approaches such as leadership theories, application as well as skills development. This book is vital not only for present leaders but also for leaders of tomorrow because it provides vital concepts for successful leaders.
Moreover, it combines traditional theories with the leadership topics, which are presented in a concise manner. This textbook covers diverse topics of ethical behaviors necessary for leaders, culture, diversity, leadership strategies and change management. I selected this book because it is full of real world examples about the way leaders tackle challenges they come across and it has various skills as well as theories effective for leadership.
The key learning that I gained from the book is about the way to develop skills as well as apply them in management. The book reveals diverse development skills necessary for becoming a successful leader or improving leadership skills. From the book, I learnt that leadership is made but not born but some theories comment that leadership is born but not made. A leader can be trained on the way to communicate ideas, motivate his or her followers as well as support and implement vital ideas for making change.
However, it is through leadership skills development that a leader may contribute to group effectiveness thus better performance in an organization. Without good leaders, the organizations will not perform well thus there is need to learn leadership skills development and their application. The knowledge from the book supports the learning of the class in various ways. One way is that the skill developments learned from the book are similar to the learning of the class. This is because the skills acquired from the book are comparable to the skills learned in class because they all aim towards building good future leaders. Another way is through building a better foundation for successful leaders. From the leadership book, an individual can develop critical thinking skills through applying leadership theories thus developing fundamental leader ship skills.
This supports the learning of the class through enabling the students better understand the qualities of a good leader or the ways of becoming good future leaders. The book has varied leadership theories and concepts that are in relation to the content as well as the strategic leadership theories. One of the leadership theories is behavioral leadership theory. This theory is imperative because it tries to explain the distinctive styles strategic leaders need to employ in order to develop effective leadership skills. This theory is developed basing on the beliefs that good leaders are made but not born. It focuses on strategic leaders’ actions, which are rooted from behaviorism concept. It is through the behavioral theory that strategic leaders can learn the way to become leaders through coaching and observation (Lussier & Achua, 2010).
Behavioral theory is related to the content of the strategic leadership course because the theory seeks to help strategic leaders understand the emotional intelligence roles in leadership. Secondly, trait leadership theory is another concept that attempts to clarify distinctive features effective for identifying certain traits essential for successful leadership practice. This theory assumes that leaders inherit particular characteristics and traits that make them good leaders.
It is dissimilar from behavioral theory because trait theory is based on the belief that great leaders are born but not made. This theory is dissimilar to the content and theories of strategic leadership course because it assumes that certain traits are the key elements of good leaders. This is one of the most difficult theories of explaining about leadership. This is because there are people who possess traits necessary for leadership but are not leaders. The trait concept usually recognizes certain personality or features shared by leaders (Lussier &Achua, 2010). However, the trait concept is not related to the content of strategic leadership course.
This is because it does not provide effective strategies for new leaders who may want to achieve their goals. Thirdly, contingency leadership concept is another theory that tries to examine the suitable leadership styles basing on the leader, followers as well as the situation. It requires leaders to use proper styles in the right situation and it is a reflection of trait and behavioral theories. According to Lussier and Achua (2010), leaders change the situations only but not the leadership styles. Thus, success depends on numerous variables such as leadership styles, characteristics of the followers and the environment.
This theory is related to the content of strategic leadership course because it seeks to advance effectively the leadership strategy of achieving the required objectives in an organization. It enables the strategic leaders to broaden their understanding of the organizational culture thus successful leadership. Lastly, integrative leadership theory attempts to unite the behavioral, trait and contingency theories in order to clarify on the success, influence and follower relationships. This theory relates to the other theories and determines the paramount theory that will work best in a suitable environment. Integrative theory is vital for strategic leaders because it identifies vital behaviors and traits effective for leaders. Although this depends on the situation, thus it is similar to situation theory whereby leaders choose the paramount course of action basing on the situational variables. There is a relationship between this theory and the content of strategic leadership course because it tries to improve the leadership persuasion and influencing skills vital for developing better leadership creativity.
In conclusion, Leadership: Theory, Application, Skill Development is one of the best leadership books especially for leaders who want to achieve successful leadership. This book is fundamental because it enables leaders to improve and develop vital skills necessary for success. Moreover, the book has various concepts that will enable leaders to achieve their goals in an organization. One of the theories is behavioral concept, which tries to explain the way leaders should posses certain characteristics vital for leading the followers. Another one is trait concept but this assumes that leaders are born but not made.
