Cosmetics are an essential part of mostly every woman’s daily routine. Make-up has become such a popular way of defining one’s “beauty”. Everyday women wear makeup to feel put together and ready to face the day.
I find that when someone has a bare face with no makeup on, they find themselves as “ugly” or that they look bad. Some thoughts that I have when doing my makeup is, “Can foundation be so toxic that without a primer, could cause damage to our skin?” and “Do we really know what ingredients are in our cosmetics that we use on a day to day basis?” Sephora has a wide range of cosmetics to choose from as well as a wide variety of foundation from different collections. I will be looking at four different types of foundation that can all be purchased at Sephora and will also be looking for similar chemicals found in each. The new Fenty collection created by Rihanna has been a huge hit in the markets these days. What I would like to know is how a celebrity has the capability to produce such high quality makeup without any experience in chemistry. I will be looking at the Fenty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation and be comparing this product with the others found on the Sephora website. Another product that I will be looking at is the Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick which has the price of $56.00.
At this price, wouldn’t you think that this should be a safe, chemical-free product? We are here to test that out. The last two products that I will be researching is Dior Diorskin Airflash Spray Foundation selling at the price of $78.00 for 70 mL of product and Bareminerals BarePro Performance Wear Powder Foundation where you receive 10 mL of product for $37.00. Foundation is one of the most commonly used makeup product. The Fenty Beauty Collection features brand new products made by Rihanna and is a very popular hit this year.
I am here to see what ingredients are used to make this expensive product. My first look at the ingredients list I found many listings with the word “Dimethicone”. Researching this lead me to many scary realizations as I had found that many products contains this ingredient. Dimethicone is a silicone that can cause debris to be trapped in your pores which makes your skin become congested. This ultimately causes acne. A silicone acts as a primer and is used to create a barrier on top of the skin. This barrier can cause many issues as it traps moisture, dirt, sweat, bacteria, sebum, as well as dead skin cells that makes your skin sick.
When exposed to all of this debris, your skin can lead to very harsh breakouts as a way of protecting the skin from letting this seep deeper into your pores. While reading a dermatology website I came across a paragraph which really surprised me. Part of the paragraph stated, “Dimethicone, which is a silicone oil, is also known as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) which is used in many health and beauty products as well as in food; Those who purchase skin care products with this ingredient sometimes don’t realize that this oil is occasionally used as a food additive as well as many industrial applications as well” (“Dimethicone”).
