Stress and Anxiety Stress is the main cause of anxiety. Many people confuse them to be the same thing. Anxiety is a disorder that more than 40 million adults in the United States suffer from. Anxiety and Depression Associate of America states that, “Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U. S.
, affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older (18% of U. S. population).
” By definition, stress is a mental, physical, and emotional expression of unresolved conflict in the mind and nervous system. Anxiety is a fearful concern and uneasiness in the mind.Stress can be caused by environmental and external factors, medical factors, and substance use. Anxiety is an effect on your body, mind, and behavior. (“Facts & Statistics”) Stress can be caused by environmental and external factors.
These could range from personal relationships, work, school, or financial problems. Just imagine what a body would go through if their partner was being unfaithful, they lost their job, they are juggling work and school, or they are only making ends meet. All of these things or just one of them can cause mass amounts of stress in someone’s life.
Looking at those circumstances, there is one major solution. Using a different mindset and allowing oneself to overcome the negative and find the positive. Some external factors could form into medical factors as well, adding double the stress. A serious medical illness, side effects from medication or a lack of oxygen could bring stress upon your body. If diagnosed with a serious medical illness, several doctor bills come along with the diagnosis. Routing back to the external factors of financial problems, this can either create stress or add more. Some side effects of medications can cause anxiety which is an effect of stress. When placed in an environment where oxygen is limited, stress is going to automatically overcome the body for survival.
Illegal medications and abuse is one of the last causes of stress. Abusing alcohol, using illegal substances, and withdrawing from illicit drugs is a good way to cause stress. Using and abusing alcohol, tobacco, or illegal substances can cause an addiction to develop. Overtime this addiction will take over the body, which is initially coming from stress. If chosen to overcome an addiction, a body is going to go through withdrawals. Anxiety comes into play very heavy in this stage.
Out of all the causes of stress it is guaranteed to take an effect on the body, the mind, and behavior. There are many effects anxiety can have on the body. Common effects are headache, muscle tension, and fatigue. One may think illness is to blame for that nagging headache, frequent insomnia or decreased productivity at work, but anxiety may actually be the culprit. “Anxiety is a debilitating condition, causing sufferers to constantly experience stress, worry, and uneasiness. As a chronic medical problem, anxiety can wreak havoc on your body and your brain, causing panic attacks, heart trouble, and even deadly strokes. Perhaps the most worrying aspect of anxiety is its potential to damage your brain, sometimes even permanently.
” (“10 Negative Effects of Anxiety on Your Brain”) Having headaches, being sore and tired all the time is, of course, going to alter the way the mind functions. A mind dealing with anxiety is going to feel restless, depressed, and a lack of motivation and focus.Continuously moving, is being restless, this can occur in the mind and in behavior. Depression alone is its own disorder but it is also an effect of anxiety. These disorders should be treated medically. It is often that one with anxiety will feel no incentive or drive for what they love to do the most. Enduring all the feelings anxiety brings on someone it is going to affect the way they behave.
Someone who has anxiety may feel the need to overeat, withdrawal from social environments, or abuse substances, such as tobacco or alcohol.Food becomes comfort because it lifts the mood up. This then leads to overeating because it is a dependent to make one happy. An overcrowded area can cause anxiety so therefore withdrawing from a social environment completely becomes the only option. A common stress factor is work and a day at work with stress ends in a cold beverage.
This is a very typical way to handle stress until the privileges are being abused. Again it becomes a dependent to solve problems. Abusing substances was also a cause of stress that wraps back around to being an effect of anxiety.Coincidence, I think not! Anxiety and stress is not the same thing, although people may think they are. In order to avoid anxiety, the stress in one’s life needs to be resolved.
Usually it always resorts back to the person. Treating only the symptoms of stress and not the overall issue is like putting on concealer to cover up acne. Wellness Coach Elizabeth Scott best puts it, “We all experience stress in our lives. Unfortunately, unmanaged stress can become overwhelming and strain our relationships, health and love for life.
