Gattaca a world where people that are considered “perfect” are “valid”. A Godly born man named, Vincent, constructs an identity to follow his dream of becoming a space traveler. Gattaca is a made-up place where an excellent society is created by cloning. Even though Vincent is constantly treated as a fugitive, he does not give up on his dreams and passions.
To some degree, Vincent is determined to succeed against all odds. Vincent cheats through society by posing as the genetically perfect Jerome Morrow. However, it is in Vincent’s discipline and drive, rather than Jerome’s genes, which will grant him the ultimate success that he has been trying to achieve all his life. Vincent constantly says that he is just as becoming and worthy as any valid is, like he said “I was as good as any, and better than most.”.
The idea of human cloning which doesn’t exist at this point in time, which makes this movie science fiction. They have crazy technology like, machines that determines health issues and life expectancy right at birth. Technology is so extreme, that people are created technologically. Genetic engineering is used to make humans perfect, well perfect for their parents.
The advancement in technology and new scientific research in the movie Gattaca made cloning possible. Families will go to a genist to control their child’s genetics according to their liking; everything from the way they look to the way they are going to act and be in their life. In our “world” there are no such things as genist doctors, which is another aspect why this movie is most definitely science fiction. This movie is warning to today’s society of what might potentially happen if cloning existed in real life.The movie is set in a place called Gattaca.
This place is a highly advanced. Gattaca explores complex presumptions of identity and individuality. The underlying message of the film is that identity is not put together to genetic makeup, and that an individual’s self respect and happiness is not bound to their genetic material. Vincent and Jerome are major individuals who ignore their genetic state. Vincent tests the eugenics system to discover his true potential, whereas Jerome has had his potential, which was guaranteed at birth, disturbingly undermined. In this way, Gattaca emphasizes that dedication, desire and drive are the true markers of humanity and existence. Gattaca also explores the importance of individuality. Within the Gattaca Institute there is a lack of distinctiveness.
All the workers wear the same exact thing, they do not connect with each other, and are almost indistinguishable from one another. Thus, the film introduces a focus on perfection and eliminates individuality. In the real world, organisms and animals have been cloned before, but a human have never been cloned. The reason for that is because there are risks and dangers.
Unlike Gattaca, the world today does not have enough knowledge and technology to create a normal functioning human. Dolly, a clone of an adult sheep, failed 276 times before a successful mammal was created. Scientist believe that cloning will be much more harmful with humans.
Babies will suffer birth defects and abnormalities. Human cloning is normal in Gattaca. Although scientists are looking into cloning, people argue that cloning humans is morally wrong.
