Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s StoneThe book starts when Harry is found on the Dursleys doorstep and they adopt him. The family already has one son named Dudley. Then, the story starts ten years later.
The Dursley’s don’t treat Harry well. Harry doesn’t even have a bedroom, he lives in a very small room under the stairs. He is lonely, and sad. He doesn’t feel like he fits in with the Dursley family. Then suddenly, there are letters that start coming to the Dursley’s house. It seems like a tsunami of letters floods their house.They try and run away from the letters to a house in the middle of the ocean, but they can’t escape. In the middle of the night, a man named Hagrid finds them and gives the letter to Harry.
The letter tells Harry that he is not a normal human, but he is a wizard, and he is invited to go to a special school for witches and wizards called Hogwarts. Soon, Harry has to get on a special train to go to Hogwarts. When he looks at his ticket to get onto the train, it says he needs to go to platform 9 ¾. How could he get on a platform that is between Platform 9 and Platform 10? He didn’t think it existed, until another wizard helped him use magic to transport onto the special Platform 9 ¾. Once Harry gets on the train to Hogwarts, he meets his first friends- Ron and Hermione. They are both going to Hogwarts for the first year too.
When they get to Hogwarts, each new student is immediately sorted into different living quarters. In Hogwarts there are Gryffindors, Hufflepuffs, Ravenclaws, and Slytherins. Gryffindor is the most popular house to be sorted into, it means that you are brave and adventurous, and do the right thing. At Hogwarts, the Slytherin house is known for being an ‘evil’ place for wizards, many dark wizards were Slytherins.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione are sorted into the Gryffindor house. During their first year at Hogwarts, Harry, Ron, and Hermione start learning a little bit of magic from their professors. Harry notices that one if his professors really doesn’t like him- Professor Snape. Harry doesn’t have any idea why Professor Snape doesn’t like him, but he is determined to find out.
As he begins to solve the mystery behind Professor Snape, he learns about some very dark secrets about Hogwarts. Eventually he finds a hidden place in the basement of Hogwarts that has been locked for many years, where a piece of Voldemort lives. Voldemort is one of the worst, most evil wizards that ever lived. Harry learns that Voldemort killed his parents, and tried to kill him too. Harry learns that only his magical powers can help stop Voldemort.
