Without their realiseit may be very harmful for their academic. This is because the students mayhave done plagiarism which is committedboth intentionally or unintentionally (Maureen and Joyce 2006). Plagiarismbasically a fraud and unethical educational behavior which is the “wrongful appropriation”and “stealing and publication” of another author’s “language,thoughts,ideas,or expressions” andthe representation of them as one’s own original work. This problem occur oftenthe result of lack knowledge, lack of skill, lack of interest, poor timemanagement and also it may happen when the students too lazy to do theirassignment but fear of failure and didn’t give credit where it is due.
Thereare four different types of plagiarism and all of them are serious violation ofacademic honesty that may cause harm for the students . First of all, directplagiarism is when the student copy or takes word-for-word transcription ofsomeone else’s work, without giving attribution and quotation marks. This canbe avoided if the student place quotation marks around any writing that is nottheir own, and list the author’s name in a citation. Second, self-plagiarism.It happen when you reusing your own work or ideas that also may cause thestudent to violates the rule of plagiarism as well.
For example, turning in apaper written for a previous class alsomeans you plagiarizes yourself even it yours own work. Additionally, takingsections of papers you have previously turned in constitutes plagiarism. Selfplagiarism also occurs when you combine several pieces of writing you havepreviously turned in to create a new paper.
To avoid this type of plagiarism,get permission from all professors involved. Third, mosaic plagiarism occurswhen a student borrows phrases from a source without using quotation marks, orfinds synonyms for the author’s language while keeping to the same generallanguage structure and meaning as found in the original. Last but not least,accidental plagiarism occurs when a students neglects to cite their sources, ormisquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphases a source by usingsimilar words, group or words, and/or sentence structure without attribution.Students must learn how to cite their sources and to take careful and accurate noteswhen doing research. Lack of intent does not absolve the student ofresponsibility for plagiarism.
Cases of accidental plagiarism are taken asseriously as any other plagiarism and are subject to the same range ofconsequences as other types of plagiarism. In Malaysia, the governance of intellectual property (IP) is placesunder the Copyright Act 1987 which came into force on 1 December 1987.Copyright protection is accorded automatically to an original piece of work aslong as it is expressed in material form, regardless of its quality. Categoriesof works recognized and protected by the Act include literary, artistic, andmusical works such as those in a book, manual, song, drawing, sculpture, film,sound recording, and computer source codes.
Anyone who commit offences underthe Copyright Act 1987 can be charged minimum fine of RM2,000 per infringingcopy if a person is found guilty of a copyright offence. Some of examples ofplagiarism cases that happen in Malaysia is when a few high profile cases ofacademic dishonesty have arisen over last few years. Two federal deputy Ministers,Richard Riot (Human Resources) and Dr Ewon Ebin (Science) were found to havefake degrees a couple of years ago by “Doubts over minister’s degrees raised inparliament – Emilia Tan, 04 October 2013”. An executive director of a privatecollege of higher education affiliated with a UK University by, and pop starFazley Yaakob was found to hold two fake degrees by”Director resigns afterUniversity of Wales concerns- November 2010″, and two public company directorswere also found to have fake degrees by “Bursa reprimands, fires formerdirector for false statement on 31 July 2015.” Beside that, student who getcaught in plagiarism may have the potention to get expell from the academy orit may cause their can’t get enough credit for the subject.

Second, separate source material and add clear attribution foreach. Third, quote the original text directly with attribution. Fourth, facultyplays a big role in preventing plagiarism which is the lecturer or the collegeshould report all cases of plagiarism in accordance to the academic honesty orlaw.
By doing this, the students might take serious on the harmful effect ofplagiarism. By preventing plagiarism doesn’t mean that the student should stopsearching and getting the information from the internet or any other sources,the student should give credit or reference to those who came up with thoseideas first by using the tips already meantioned. No one should take withoutpermission what is not ours.
