Personal statementIn the 21st century civil engineering plays a more vital role in Iraq than ever before, especially after the liberation in 2003. The Iraqi reconstruction was unprecedented for itsscope and urgency, so, too, are its opportunities for corruption. With billions of dollarsflowing around a country that was rife with corruption under its previous regime, andwith civil projects being launched at a rate not seen since the end of World War II,keeping tabs on spending has proven a challenge.
In that time I was at the firs year inbuilding and construction engineering department studying to get my B.sc. degreewaiting to be a part f hundreds of engineers working hard to make Iraq a better place tolive. Just after that the only time I was afraid was after my house got bombed because mysister is a British citizen and when my best friend got killed because he was also a civilengineer working in Baghdad airport, these events made me think of my future and Ithought I will never finish my study. Going to the college was very hard and dangerous. After graduation my family and I moved to the north of Iraq (Erbil city) the safest placein Iraq.
The city was undertaking huge operations of reconstruction which enabled me toget a job in a project consists 3 multi storey buildings as a site engineer, just then I feltthat I??™m in the right way to help my country to be one in the forefront of the middle eastcountries. Till now I sent almost three years working in many places in Iraq in manypositions from site engineers to site manager getting a good experience in dealing with allkind of people in the site and a good leader ship skills, especially when I was working inAnnasriya city (southern Iraq) in a huge project. I had more than fifty employees workingunder my supervision. Working in the south as site manager made me believe that theknowledge of business management is an essential part of project management, Becauseof that I started studying to get a Master??™s degree in Business Administration at theLebanese French University (B.M.U) in Erbil. The B.M.
U has a partnership with LEONUniversity in France. Getting a master??™s degree in civil construction and managementafter getting my MBA degree in June 2010 will make me qualified and ready to achievesomething important to my self and my country.I see my self after three years running huge projects or maybe I will establish a trainingcenter and teaching engineers to be more professionals and experienced to make Iraq oneof the best countries in the Middle East.I believe that Iraq needs well educated project managers with the knowledge of all newtechnologies to participate in the reconstruction operations now and for the next tenyears.I participated in a variety of sports and played on the school soccer team.
These sportshave shown me the importance of teamwork and allow me to participate prolifically in ateam. I hope that my captaincy of the school soccer team and my role in the StudentsAssociation have developed the leadership skills that I will require at university and laterin my career.Along with my interest in reading scientific journals I find reading fiction to be agratifying experience. I find that reading allows me to utilize my imagination.
I alsoenjoy writing creatively, bicycling and designing machinery.Although I am applying as an international student I often visit the United States andbelieve that I will be able to adapt to life there. I feel confident that I will be able to copewith the assiduous work required at university.
As an engineer I would like to be at the forefront of engineering research, advancing theintegration of the concepts of physics, chemistry and biology resulting in an ameliorationof our daily lives.
