The government of UK provides incentives for the purchase ofsix categories of vehicles 44.Category one vehicles are vehicles that have the characteristic of emittingless than 50 g of CO2 per km of drive and no CO2 emissionsfor a travel of at least 112 km. The grant considered for these type ofvehicles covers 35% of purchase cost up to a maximum of GBP14,500. Category one car models include BEVs of:BMW i3, BYD e6, Citroen CZero, Ford Focus Electric, Hyundai IONIQ Electric, KiaSoul EV, Mercedes-BenzB-Class Electric Drive, Nissan e-NV200 (5-seater and 7-seater), Nissan LEAF,Peugeot iON, Renault Fluence, Renault ZOE, Smart fortwo electric drive, Smartforfour electric drive, Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X, Volkswagen e-up!,Volkswagen e-Golf and FCV model of ToyotaMirai 44.Category two vehicles are vehiclesthat have the characteristic of emitting less than 50 g of CO2 perkm of drive and also emit no CO2 emissions for a travel of at least16 km.
The grant considered for these type of vehicles covers 35% of purchasecost up to a maximum of GBP 2,500 44.Category two car models include PHEVs of: BMW225xe, BMW 330e, BMW530e, Hyundai IONIQ PHEV, Kia Niro PHEV, Kia Optima PHEV, Mercedes-Benz C350 e(with 17 inch rear wheels), Mercedes-Benz E350 e SE, MINI Countryman PHEV,Mitsubishi Outlander (except Commercial), Toyota Prius Plug-in, VauxhallAmpera, Volkswagen Golf GTE, Volkswagen Passat GTE, Volvo V60 D5 Twin Engine, VolvoV60 D6 Twin Engine, Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine Momentum (2017 model year only),and Audi A3 e-tron 44.Category three vehicles are vehiclesthat have the characteristic of emitting between 50 and 75 g of CO2per km of drive and also emit no CO2 emissions for a travel of atleast 32 km. The grant considered for these type of vehicles covers 35% ofpurchase cost up to a maximum of GBP 2,500. This category of vehicles includesMercedes-Benz E350 e AMG Line which is a PHEV 44.Category 2 and 3 cars with a retail price over GBP 60,000 are not counted as eligible for an incentivegrant 44.Category four vehiclesincludes motorcycles that have thecharacteristic of emitting no CO2 emissions and can travel of at least50 km between charges. The grant considered for the motorcyclescovers 20% of the purchase price for these vehicles, up to a maximum of GBP 1,500.
This category of vehicles includes BMW C evolution, Energica Ego, Energica Eva,Scutum Silence S02, Torrot Muvi, Vmoto 100, Vmoto 120, and Zero Motorcycles(all models). Category five vehiclesincludes mopeds that have the characteristic of emitting no CO2emissions and can travel of at least 30 km betweencharges. The grant considered forthe motorcycles covers 20% of the purchase price for these vehicles, up to amaximum of GBP 1,500. This category of vehicles includes Torrot Muvi City, UGBEST e-City, and Vmoto Super Soco TS1200R. Category six vehiclesincludes vans that have the characteristic of emitting less than 75 g CO2emissions per km of drive and can travel of at least 16 km between charges. The grant considered for themotorcycles covers 20% of the purchase price for these vehicles, up to amaximum of GBP 8,000. The government also provides tax incentives in the form of reduced taxation forcompany cars.
Government also plans to spendmore than GBP 600 million in the period of 2015-2020 to support ultra-low emission vehicle (ULEV) manufacturing andadoption with the objective of 100% new Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV)sales by 2040. There are also incentives inthe forms of free parking and access to bus lanes 19. The HRSInfrastructure Grants Scheme funds projects via two streams 43.In the first stream, up to 100% of the eligible costs for 6-8 HRSs is providedto upgrade those HRSs from demonstration projects to commercial HRSs. Thebudget for this stream is about GBP 2 million 43.
In the second stream, up to 60% of eligible costs is provided for 4-7 HRSs with a budget of about GBP 3.5 million.The applicant has to match the remaining cost from other sources 43.The UK government also provides incentives fordevelopment of three types of EV charging facilities as explained in thefollowing 45.
· Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS): providing funding for the installation ofcharging points at houses all over the UK (covering up to 75% of the cost ofinstalling and capped at GBP 500) 45 46.· WorkplaceCharging Scheme (WCS): providing funding for theinstallation of charging points with a limit of 20 charging points across allsites for each application (capped at GBP300 for each socket) 47.· On-streetResidential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS): providing funding forlocal authorities to install an on-street residential chargepoints (covering up to 75% ofthe cost of installing the charging point and providing a specificparking space and capped at GBP 7,500) 48.Table18 shows the number of charging points in the UK from 2012 to 2016. 1Exchange rate for GBP in December 6th, 2017 is 1 GBP ~ 1.34 USD
