The Emotional Impact of Abortion versus AdoptionJulie SykesCom/155October 2, 2011Suzanne MahlerThe Emotional Impact of Abortion vs. AdoptionWomen that experience an unplanned pregnancy should plan to put their unborn child up for adoption instead of choosing an abortion.
Research shows that the emotional strain on women that choose abortion is greater than on women who choose to give their child up for adoption. Women that choose abortion have a greater risk of developing depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the need for psychotropic medication. Women that choose adoption are also at risk for depression but may also experience the joy of giving life to a wanting family. Many women choose abortion over adoption without weighing the pros and cons. Abortion may seem like an easy way out when looking at the short term effects, but when you really do the research abortion has many side effects that could be prevented if women would choose adoption.
The choice of abortion not only affects the women who makes the decision but may also have effects on their family. After an abortion, ???commonly reported reactions include: feelings of guilt, anxiety, helplessness, grief and/or remorse; feelings of anger, bitterness, and resentment; feelings of distrust and betrayal; lowered self-esteem; fear of future pregnancies, flashbacks to the abortion experience; nightmares or sleeping disorder; sexual dysfunction; eating disorders; substance abuse; self-destructive behavior; broken or abusive relationships; problems bonding with other children; suicidal thoughts or tendencies; and other problems.??? (Dr. Martha Shuping, 1999) All these reported reactions can be bundled into one word??¦Depression. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is also known for appearing in women after an abortion. ???Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition thats triggered by a terrifying event. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.??? (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2011) ???Women may experience abortion as a traumatic event for several reasons.
Many are forced into an unwanted abortion by husbands, boyfriends, parents, or others. If the woman has repeatedly been a victim of domineering abuse, such an unwanted abortion may be perceived as the ultimate violation in a life characterized by abuse.??? (David C.
Reardon, 1997). PTSD can be a lifelong condition that could require continuing treatment. Because of PTSD and depression many women are left with no other option but to turn to psychiatric help which may lead to the prescription of psychotropic medication. Although there are many other things that can lead to this outcome, abortion is a huge risk factor. Why would you want to rely on medication to get you through your day, when you could choose adoption and possibly bypass some of the effects of abortion Adoption is an option that everyone has and can have a happier outcome. Not only for the birthing mother but for the adoptive family. There are closed adoptions and open adoptions so women have the choice to keep in contact with the child or not.
In abortion there is one choice??¦death. Adoption also has harmfull side effects such as depression but there may also be a sence of accomplishment and joy knowing that a child has been brought into this world as a gift to a family. Many birth mothers experience the sence of loss of a child shortly after birth and sometimes in the few months leading up to birth.
???This particular type of loss is different from a loss through death, however, because there is rarely a public acknowledgment, and friends and family of the birth parents may attempt to ignore the loss by pretending that nothing has happened. In some cases, the secrecy surrounding the pregnancy and adoption may make it difficult for birth parents to seek out and find support as they grieve their loss.??? (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2004). Adoption is a lifelong, intergenerational process which unites the triad of birth families, adoptees and adoptive families forever. [ (Kaplan, 1982) ].
Adoption, especially of adolescents, can lead to both great joy and tremendous pain. There are many couples in the United States who are unable to bare children on their own. The opportunity of being able to adopt someone elses child is their answer to fulfilling this emotional hardship. The birth mother has given a family a gift that will continue to keep giving contentment to the adoptive parents and their family. Adoption is one of lifes events which bring out more emotions than any other. Why In the beginning: the birth mother realizes she is pregnant, and cannot keep her child for whatever reason. Despair, joy, desperation, disbelief – all these emotions rage within her and her family. The birth mother goes home with an empty heart and empty arms, empty of emotion – for now.
(Why, 2005) Even though some women are faced with a very difficult decision in their lives, rather they choose adoption or abortion. In addition, in an unplanned pregnancy the women that have decided to give their baby up for adoption rather than abortion are giving a great deal of love to the baby and to the family the seeks a child for adoption. The women that has chosen adoption will know for the rest of their lives that they was able to give a gift of life to someone that many people cannot give or that some will not give. This will help for the women to have closure with their baby.
The birth mothers also know that the adoptive parents have to be screened in order for them to adopt a baby. This helps the birth mothers feel at ease knowing their baby will be taken care of. Women, can then continue to live their lives without having the emotional stress of caring for a baby and the financial burden that comes with raising a child. Women will also always remember giving birth to their baby but at the same time will have the joy of giving life.
By choosing adoption over abortion this also gives the birth mother time to decide if she is going to be able to keep the child and raise it herself. In conclusion, it would show that regardless of all statistics to the differing, it is most likely easier for any woman in the long run to give an unwanted baby up for adoption rather than abortion.”
