The question I choose for this essay is ‘Choose one
organisation (either from the module or your own reading/experiences) and
discuss how it tries to motivate and retain talented staff, drawing on aspects
of the main motivational theories to show why it might be effective.’  The reason I choose this question is that I
want to discuss how motivation can change someone’s professional life and if
that impacts them in any other way, and what can be the disadvantages of not
getting recognition or the effect that an employee is putting in their work to
make the organisation better. This question is also asking to do research on
main motivational theories, how it affects the organisations and connect them
to it. Motivation is something that helps opens an individual’s behaviour, it
shows how they act and behave in certain manner and situation. This adds
towards the process of how an individual is showing extrinsic and intrinsic
motivation, according to incentive theory extrinsic (external) motivation is
something an individual wants to gain a reward or avoid a negative outcome, for
example, financial rewards such as getting benefits, bonuses, and increase in
salary and intrinsic (internal) motivation is when an individual’s behaviour is
motivated by an internal desire and provides a sense of satisfaction, for
example, your worked being recognised and acknowledge. Motivation is very
important in business as it makes the individuals and staff highly motivated.
It also allows the employees to become more capable and active in their work
and make them more efficient toward their work which is a result of high
productivity, cost savings, good customer service and help business improve for
the long term. Whereas employees with low motivation tend to work slow. As they
feel they have not been appreciated for the work they provide which causes a
lack of distraction as it takes them off their goal or purpose.


The more organisations appreciate and motivate
there staff the more likely the employees are going to stay with the company
for a long time. For example, in the article ‘The Google Way Of Motivating
Employees’ discusses how what Google does to keep their employees motivated all
the time. The article mentions that they have a gym, massage therapy and hair
stylist available. They also have an on-site car wash, oil change, bike repair,
dry cleaning and onsite doctor. Lunch and dinner are free of charge along with
the financial support they give to their employees whether its maternity
benefits or with adopting a child.  Alongside
with all the benefits that Google provides, they also give their employees the
freedom of when and how they can complete the work. The sense of relaxation
motivates the staff to do better in the project which is given to them as an
example one Google engineer by the name of Chade-Ment Tan really benefited from
this 80-20 rule, as he desired to make world peace, even though it seemed
impossible google didn’t discourage him. After some time Tan designed a strong
course on mindfulness with the assistance of a Stanford University professor
and in results, Tan’s course is a great success in his company. Considering
there are other companies such as Michelle Mone, where they follow a very
strict traditional rule. As her video shows that she likes to work in quite
environment, having organised work space and where all her staff listening to
her and following her rules such as dressing smart. She also uses intrinsic
motivation toward her staff by giving them rewards, allows them to understand
that she does appreciate their work which motivates them to do better.

One of the important factors that helps the
employees improve would be employee retention as it helps balance the business
out to maintain a working environment. Plus this adds towards the different theories which are made on
motivation. Such as Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Theory and Frederick Herzberg theory.


Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory
shows the five different needs of an individual. The most effect and powerful need
that will motivate an individual would be the most basic need. It also shows
how individuals are motivated differently depending on what level they put
themselves in. These are the five basic and key needs which are made towards
motivation through Maslow’s theory are physiological need- basic need for
survival, safety need –  physical health
and security, love and belongingness- social needs and feeling loved by others,
esteem needs- need for status and recognition and self-actualization need. Maslow’s
theory also be classified into two groups which are extrinsic and intrinsic motivation as the higher you are the more intrinsic
motivation suit you but the lower you are more extrinsic motivation would suit
you. The advantages of this
theory would be it helps managers understand how motivate their staff are, it accounts for both
inter-personal and intra-personal variations in human behaviour and its thinking about human’s
motivations, its identifying the similarities and difference among them. On the
other hand the disadvantage of this theory would be lack of direct effect on a relationship
between need and behaviour as may cause different type of behaviour in
different persons.
