In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee prejudice is everywhere not just between races, but in male and female. A lot of the prejudice is because of a lack of understanding between one another. Boo Radley is a very mysterious character in this book and because of that the kids are very prejudice against him. Tom Robinson was a black man accused of raping a white girl and he was going up against an all white jury. Atticus was assigned to his case and since everyone was so prejudice against Tom nobody could believe that Atticus was actually going to try to defend him. Scout like overalls and jeans but no one of the other ladies like those so they showed prejudice against her by making fun of her clothes and trying to change her too something she isn??™t. Prejudice is all through the book To Kill a Mockingbird with Tom Robinson and blacks, Boo Radley because of not knowing anything about him, and with Scout because of her being a tomboy.
When people don??™t know much about something rumors start and people become prejudice against people because of these rumors. This is what happens to Boo Radley in this book because he never comes outside and he lived with his parents at the age of around 30. This caused people to become curious which lead to false stories for example ???Boo was sitting in the living room cutting some items from The Maycomb Tribune to paste in his scrapbook. His father entered the room.
As Mr. Radley passed, Boo drove the scissors into his parent??™s leg, pulled them out, wiped them on his pants, and resumed his activities.??? (p11-12). People were prejudice against Boo who really turned out to be a nice guy and even saved both Jem and Scout from Mr. Ewell who had a knife and was trying to kill them. Prejudice in general is wrong but the stories that made people prejudice towards Boo were wrong in the first place. The biggest prejudice in this book by far is the prejudice towards blacks and specifically Tom Robinson. Tom was accused of raping Mayella Ewell and was said to have beaten her until Mr.
Ewell heard noises and came in to see what was going on. When he came in Tom ran and Mr. Ewell got the sheriff right away but no doctor was called. Tom Robinson was up against an all white jury and going into the case nobody believed Tom except for the other blacks of Maycomb County, Atticus, and Scout and Jem.
Nobody thought that Atticus was going to try on this case but Atticus told his kids he had to ?????¦every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that effects him personally. This is mine??¦??? (p86). When Cecil Jacobs called Atticus an N-lover this just shows how they treat a white person that is doing his job but happens to be doing his job for a black person. Even after an amazing job at the trial by Atticus which caused Mr.
Cunningham (who was one of the men in the mob that were trying to kill Tom the one night at the jail) wanted an acquittal they still said Tom was guilty. This is why Jem changed his thoughts about the people of Maycomb County from thinking they were the best people in the world to the worst people in the world. Prejudice is even found in women towards other women or girls. Scout likes to wear overalls and jeans and because of that most of the ladies around them always make fun of Scout and her clothes. Scout??™s Aunt Alexandra, even makes fun of her for this and tries to change her into something she isn??™t. She makes Scout wear dresses and drink tea with her and the other ladies of Maycomb County. They make fun of her ???You??™re mighty dressed up, Miss Jean Louise, where are your britches today??? (p262).
This supports Jem??™s thought about Maycomb people and how they are not the best people in the world because they make fun of and are prejudice against people of not only same race but same sex. Prejudice was found everywhere in this book with Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, and Scout but they were different kinds of prejudice. With Boo it was lack of understanding and knowing him and things about him. For Tom it was just the color of his skin that made people prejudice against him and the other blacks. Lastly for Scout it was that she was a tomboy and she liked wearing overalls and jeans instead of dresses.
As you can see there are many types of prejudice but no matter what kind, it isn??™t good. People judge others by rumors, skin color, and what they wear and everything else that shouldn??™t be used to judge people. Prejudice is still here now and always will be and this is a true fact. There is nothing you can do about it because somewhere someone is judging someone based upon rumors, skin color, or because they are just different.
